Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy – What Is It?

By February 22, 2020April 14th, 2021Blog

Are you familiar with Platelet-Rich-Plasma Therapy?

PRP is a concentrated form of platelet-rich-plasma protein which is derived from whole blood which is then centrifuged or spun to remove the red blood cells. This form of regenerative medicine contains concentrated growth factors and substances that inhibit degeneration. The net result is spurring your body to heal itself which can be useful in many musculoskeletal problems ranging from sprains, pulled muscles, or sport injuries to chronic joint problems such as arthritis, bursitis, or tendonitis.

What is the process?

When you visit a PRP specialist, they will draw a sample of blood that will then be spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the platelet-rich-plasma. Then they will inject it to the area of the body in need of healing.

This is the positive and beneficial side of this type of therapy for injuries. Regenerative medicine is inherently more natural, and healthy for the body. With regenerative medicine, we can encourage your body’s own immune system to produce a restorative response and ultimately heal injuries.

Our providers possess the additional training required to administer PRP in a much less painful way than one might otherwise experience at other pain clinics. Both doctors are board certified anesthesiologists. Dr. Julian is board-certified in chronic pain management using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance primarily. This is critical for accessing certain joints or regions that ultrasound or landmark based techniques cannot adequately image. Dr. Fisk is board certified in ultrasound guided musculoskeletal and neurogenic pain management. This is important for safe nerve blocks and diagnosis as well as injection of soft tissues such as tendons that X-ray cannot see. Both doctors participate in each procedure: one providing anesthesia and nerve blocks, the other performing the PRP injection. Combined, Drs. Julian and Fisk deliver the best possible experience and results.

We are patient-focused and will only recommend PRP if it will be effective.  Contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
