Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by extensive musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.  Researchers believe that fibromyalgia intensifies painful sensations, impacting how the brain processes and the body manifests these physical symptoms.

Symptoms sometimes begin after

  • Physical trauma
  • Surgery
  • Significant psychological stress

In other cases, symptoms may gradually accumulate over time with no single (identifiable) triggering event.  Symptoms may include:

  • Widespread pain. The pain associated with fibromyalgia often is described as a constant dull ache that has lasted for at least three months. To be considered widespread, the pain must occur on both sides of your body and above and below your waist.
  • People with fibromyalgia often awaken tired, even though they report sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain, and many patients with it have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.
  • Cognitive difficulties.A symptom commonly referred to as “fibro fog” impairs the ability to focus, pay attention and concentrate on mental tasks.

Women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Individuals who suffer from it may also experience:

  • Severe headaches
  • TMJ
  • IBS
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

While there is no cure for Fibromyalgia, exercise, relaxation and stress-reduction measures may help.

At Acute Pain Therapies we have successfully administered Ketamine infusions for some patients living with Fibromyalgia.  Ketamine is used in anesthesia and is often delivered as an infusion or intramuscularly in those settings.  Ketamine can be an effective treatment for several chronic pain states including Fibromyalgia and the many symptoms the go along with it.
