Meralgia Paresthetica – Outer Thigh Pain – Dr. Zachary Fisk

By May 4, 2018April 14th, 2021Blog

Meralgia Paresthetica is a condition characterized by pain in the outer part of the thigh. Some people describe the pain as burning, while other descriptors include “tightness,” “muscle achiness,” and/or “shooting pain” starting in the upper hip region. The condition is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which supplies sensation to the outer thigh down to the knee. Due to the location of the nerve, people suffering from the condition also frequently experience knee pain.

Treating Meralgia Paresthetica

At Acute Pain Therapies in Bellevue, Washington our approach to treating this thigh pain is with isolated nerve cryotherapy. Isolated Nerve Cryotherapy targets a specific nerve that is causing pain as opposed to the entire body. The treatment uses safe, localized cooling technology to disable sensory nerves in the affected part of the body, in turn helping to relieve pain. Treatments are applied over three or four visits, providing results that last for approximately three months. During this time, the nerve will heal itself. Benefits of Isolated Nerve Cryotherapy include:

  • Facilitating physical therapy
  • Breaking up scar tissue compressing this nerve
  • Causing regression of neuromas
  • Increasing range of motion and regenerative circulation
  • Soothing muscles and skin

In addition to treating Meralgia Paresthetica, Isolated Nerve Cryotherapy treatment is useful for patients who experience chronic pain in the knees, ribs, and breasts.
